JAKARTA: The Komodo Island National Park is struggling to be listed among the world’s seven wonders as public support continues to decline, an official said.

East Nusa Tenggara Tourism Agency head Ansherius Takalapeta told Antara the position of Komodo Island had dropped to between 8 and 14. It was previously between 1 and 7.

The island has been named one of 28 finalists from 440 nominees for the world’s seven wonders by the New7Wonders Foundation.

The finalists were selected via an online voting system that will continue until 2011.

Komodo was believed to be the last primeval animal on earth.

“We will continue to campaign for support not only from the people in East Nusa Tenggara, but from the people of Indonesia,” Anshrerius said, adding the success of Komodo Island would benefit the whole country.

He said that without the support of all Indonesians, the dream of being selected as one of the seven wonders of the world would never come true. – JP
